Today is the 75th anniversary of D-Day. There have been international celebrations, national celebrations, and Houston has its own deep connection with that famous day.
One of those connections is 94-year old Clyde Combs, who was a quartermaster on a PT boat that day picking up survivors. He told us about what he remembers from that day.
“You could hear the drone of thousands of planes going over and bombing the area before we landed,” he said.
We've all seen Battleship Texas at one point or another. Andy Smith is the Texas' Ship Manager, and told KTRH she played a big role 75 years ago.
“Battleship Texas was the actually the flagship for bombardment operations at Omaha Beach and Pointe du Hoc,” Smith told KTRH News.
And coming up on Saturday, there will be events on Texas to honor this anniversary.
“We will have a ceremony that will honor some of the veterans that served on the ship. This was their battlefield,” Smith explained.
You can go to the ceremony for free between 8am and 2pm.
