Rodeo Houston’s 46th Annual World’s Championship Bar-B-Que contest starts today, February 21 and runs through Saturday, February 23.
- Thursday, Feb. 21: 5 to 11 p.m.
- Friday, Feb. 22: noon to 11 p.m.
- Saturday, Feb. 23: 9 a.m. to 11 p.m.
Included in the ticket price, is a sliced brisket plate at The Chuck Wagon.
Last year's attendance was right at 215,000 people, serving 28,000 plates of barbecue to the public.
Event coordinator Clay Scott said more than 250 teams are competing for world championship bragging rights.
"We truly are in international event. We have teams from Japan, Ireland, Australia, Great Britain and Sweden that are competing against some of the local favorites," said Scott.
Tomorrow, all the teams will compete in the Dutch Oven contest with their best desserts.
Last year, the teams used 13, 000 bags of ice for only their consumption.
Scott said teams get creative.
"United Airlines has a pit that looks like an airplane, we have pits that look like fire engines, we have pits that look like a big revolver, we have a pit that looks like an armadillo, there's a pit that looked like a covered wagon," said Scott.
He added the contest has been called Mardi Gras with boots and smoke. But, it's still all about the food.

Judging will be held Saturday, Feb. 23. The results will be announced at The Garden at 7 p.m.
