Texas lawmakers are pushing legislation to add names and photos to "Lone Star Cards" to prevent food stamp fraud.
State investigators in 2016, uncovered $17 million worth of fraud in 154 Texas counties.
“They take that $300 card and sell it somebody for $200. You get $200 cash and that individual $300 worth of supplies or food for $200,” says state Rep. Dade Phelan, R-Beaumont.
Phelan told KBMT the legislation would also give the state greater oversight over how often Texans apply for new benefit cards.
“That means more services, more food, more supplies to those Texans who are truly vulnerable and truly need it.”
