The top area codes targeted by spammers include Houston, Austin, San Antonio, Dallas and Fort Worth, according to a report written about by Fox News .
Some major cell phone carriers are trying to help their customers by offering programs.
The government is trying to enforce what it can.
And, there's third party groups, like YouMail , that are trying to help consumers.
YouMail CEO Alex Quilici said the south is targeted as a whole for a couple of reasons.
"Everybody in the south is polite and wants to answer the phone. And, if you answer the phone, you're going to get more robocalls," said Quilici. "As a whole, the south is not doing as well economically as places like maybe Seattle, San Francisco, New York. So you wind up getting more payment reminders and other economic reminders."
He said over the past three years, there have been more than 110 billion robocalls made, and it's growing 50 percent every year.
A separate report has estimated that 50 percent of all U.S. mobile traffic will be scam calls this year.
