In Austin, new legislation being presented in the Texas House would allow liquor sales on Sunday, repealing what's known as "blue laws." Forty-two states already do.
House Bill 1100, introduced by State Rep. Richard Peña Raymond, a democrat from Laredo, Texas, is asking to allow liquor stores to open seven days a week.
Sundays noon to 10 p.m. included. "Blue laws" have always been meant to prohibit sales of specific items on Sundays, a day intended for church and rest.
In Texas, Sunday liquor sales of every other alcohol beverage is allowed for retailers like bars, eateries, nightclubs, grocery and convenience stores. Hotels as well.
The bill would also permit liquor stores to open Monday through Saturday, from 9 a.m. and 10 p.m..
Raymond says "Allowing Sunday sales in Texas is long overdue. I’ve heard from many constituents – including small business owners – who have asked me to file this bill to let the free market be free.’’ “Now is the time for Texas to repeal this outdated law.".
