The man accused of causing a drunk driving crash that injured two Houston Police officers had a blood alcohol level that was twice the legal limit, according to prosecutors.
The crash happened on Monday as the officers responded to a call on Telephone Rd. near Peekskill Lane in southeast Houston. Investigators say 23-year old Cesar Collazo turned in front of the officers, causing a near-head on collision. The patrol vehicle rolled over and burst into flames. One officer, two-year veteran John Daily, was burned over fifty-percent of his body. Both injured officers are expected to survive.
More arrests are possible. Prosecutors say they found several receipts in Collazo’s SUV, suggesting he bought alcohol several times from the same store on the day of the crash.
Collazo is being held on multiple felony counts, including driving while intoxicated and failure to stop and render aid. He appeared in court earlier this morning. The judge in the case has deemed him a flight risk because he is here on a work visa that expires at the end of the month. Collazo's bond is set at $250,000 and he has been ordered to wear an ankle bracelet.
