(Mount Holly, NJ) -- A New Jersey couple who raised hundreds of thousands of dollars to help a homeless man is now accused of making the whole thing up. Last November, 28-year-old Kate McClure and 39-year-old Mark D'Amico opened a GoFundMe account for a homeless drug addict named Johnny Bobbit, claiming he spent his last 20 dollars to fill up McClure's tank after her car ran out of gas on a Pennsylvania highway.
The story went viral and they eventually raised over 400-thousand dollars. In August, Bobbit sued the couple, claiming they were withholding funds from him. The couple said he was on drugs and were waiting until he got clean.
Now, prosecutors believe the couple conspired with Bobbit and made up the story to get rich quick. They surrendered to authorities Wednesday. Bobbitt is still at large.
