HOUSTON - A jury has sentenced Terry Thompson to 25 years in prison for the 2017 chokehold death of John Hernandez just two days after the jury gave it's verdict of guilty on Monday.
The death of 24-year-old Hernandez happened outside a Denny's restaurant in northeast Houston in May of 2017. A first trial earlier this year ended in a hung jury.
On Tuesday the jury heard from character witnesses concerning Thompson's past. Prosecutors say they're seeking a long sentence. Thompson could have got life in prison. His wife, former Harris County Sheriff's Deputy Chauna Thompson, is also charged in the case and she will have will have her day in court in 2019.
