The final numbers are in, and the tallies are astounding.
Nearly one-million Harris County voters cast ballots early for the midterm election. More than 96,000 took advantage of Friday’s beautiful fall weather to stand in line at locations around the greater Houston area. More than 850,000 cast ballots in person during the early voting period, while another 120,000 participated via mail-in ballot.
Turnout was also high in both Montgomery and Fort Bend Counties,
Election Day is Tuesday.
One of the most closely watched races both in Texas and around the country has been the battle for Ted Cruz’ Senate seat. Heading into early balloting, Cruz held a double-digit lead over Democratic Challenger Beto O’Rourke, but the latest poll from The Hill suggests the Republican’s lead has shrunk to four-points.
Democrats have not won a statewide race in Texas since the mid-1990's.
Much like the 2016 Presidential election, where pollsters mistakenly predicted an easy win for Hillary Clinton, tracking the minds of voters this time has been difficult. Those who are conducting exit polls suggest nearly one-third of the voters have no history of casting ballots in midterm elections, while another 11-percent are new voters. That means it’s hard to predict which way the election will go.
