There were cheers and backslaps as Houston ISD announced the Texas Education Agency’s accountability rating looked kindly upon the Bayou City, ensuring the school district escapes sanctions for at least another year as four habitually under-performing schools rise to meet state standards.
“According to TEA’s accountability rating, 251 of our campuses, or 91% of schools rated, earned a “Met Standard” for 2017-2018,” the district announced at a Wednesday press conference. Because of a special waver due to the number of schools impacted by Hurricane Harvey, Houston ISD was among the districts that was not assigned a letter grade but was given a standard that the majority of schools and students were required to hit.
Among the highest-rated Houston area schools are Devers ISD in Liberty County and Harmony School of Science-Houston, both of which got an A.
Harris County’s A+ Unlimited Potential was among the state’s poorest performers.
Scoring a 99 out of a possible 100 were Spring Branch Academic Institute, DeBakey High and Carnegie Vanguard High Schools.
