Educators, Police Talk School Safety

Nearly three weeks after the Santa Fe High School shooting, local education leaders and law enforcement gathered at the Harris County Department of Education to talk about school safety.

The conversation centered around active shooter response, mental health aid, cyber security, even dropout prevention awareness and threat assessment.

"I am going to be advising our districts to have threat assessment teams created at the campus and district level to get out in front of some of these things," says Ecomet Burley, director of the HCDE's Center for Safe and Secure Schools.

Burley says they're following Gov. Abbott's lead in taking a more pro-active approach.

"If it means that we have to have metal detectors, that's what we have to do," he says. "We can't continue to have the victimization of kids and teachers like we're having at such an alarming rate."

Arming teachers also remains a hot topic.

"Huffman ISD is now looking into arming teachers," says Burley. "It's going to take quite a bit of discussion to get a general consensus that's what needs to be done. It has to be vetted as well as it's a local decision."
