A salute to March 2nd, and important date to Texans, for the Republic of Texas was borne out of the Texians Declaration of Independence adopted on March 2, 1836.   No coincidence that March 2nd is the birthdate of the hero of Texas Independence General Sam Houston…born March 2, 1793.

It’s not easily explained to non-Texans or sometimes new ones the significance of this independence, the birth of the Republic, the heroes who made it so… but it’s a great, unfolding tale to explore.  Houston obviously named for Sam, who became the first elected President of the Republic of Texas, our city also the first capital of Texas.  There’s a lot of history, known and little known, to take in at the Sam Houston museum at Sam Houston State University in Huntsville.  That’s where Sam Houston is buried, by the way.  His choice the Oakwood Cemetery in north Huntsville.
