Best wishes to Matt from his listeners

Matt Patrick, host of the KTRH Morning News, has revealed that he has exhausted all options and has discontinued cancer treatments.

Below, we've posted messages of support from KTRH listeners and fans from other cities where Matt has worked in the past. To add yours, email Web Editor Rachel Estrada HERE.

Just hearing your name puts a smile on my face because your smile was so infectious.  Loved listening to you on the radio and really loved chatting with you in the studio.  Please know that you and your family will be in our thoughts and especially our prayers.  Keep positive thoughts and keep smiling!

We don't know each other but I read your story.  Our hearts are not here to do battle but to love and give compassion to our selves and to others.  Your compassion for your body is honorable. I pray that the right intervention will come to free you of pain and illness.  Whatever the intervention I pray for your highest and best. Peace

I grew up listening to WKDD with Matt & BA and then Matt and Angela.  It was never the same after Matt left.  All of my friends listened to WKDD at that time too. My sister and I even share a birthday with Matt. Our prayers are with Matt and his family at this time.  Thank you for all the laughs and even some tears Matt. God bless.

I have missed you in the mornings in Akron since you left so many years ago. Wasn't aware that you were fighting the fight until this week. Stay strong - mysterious things can happen! Good luck to you in your continued fight! Why do terrible things happen to great people- a question that will never be answered!

I am 48 years old and that gives you an idea of when I listened to your show. I truly could not start my day without you or it  just "wasn't right". I listened from 84-87, then left for OSU which I then had Matt Patrick withdrawal and had my mom tape your show because I felt I was missing out!! I came back and worked at ACH and Aultman Hospital and continued to enjoy you ,until you left. You were the best at what you did and made a difference in so many ways. This morning I heard this news and it broke my heart! I never met you but felt I knew you and your family. All I can offer are my prayers so you can count on that. Thank ....from a friend you never met.

I can only hope you remember this young lady, Treadmill Rebekah from the Million Dollar year at Akron Children's. I wanted to send you an update which I hope makes you smile in what I believe might be a time of need. Rebekah will graduate from Wright state in Dayton this December as an RN, she still goes through Chemo once a month and plans on working at Akron Children's giving back to the place that kept her alive. You asked her during that Radiothon interview if she wanted you to stop broadcasting and pushing for monies for that hospital. She said no don't stop. She said you can't stop. Matt, she never stopped, she still pushes through good days and horrible days. Much love to you and your family from myself my wife Debbie and the boys. This old man will never forget you Matt, never ever. As I've always said, My door to my home will forever be open to you and your family. Thank you.

Romans 15:13I just want to let Matt know how much I enjoyed listening to him on WKDD in Ohio for years. I've missed his voice since he's been gone! I am praying for you and your family, and just know that Northeast Ohio loves you and is behind you every step of the way.

Even though we never met, you always felt like family. I listened to my radio constantly, and you provided humor, comfort, information, music, and above all else, a much-needed distraction. You are truly everything that was ever good about radio, when the industry was still local, pure, and organic. You are one of the people who made me want to do what I do. I started at WJER in Dover as a high school senior, and 21 years later I'm GM and now becoming an owner. You and a few others with the true passion for the industry made it possible. Thank you for making radio seem like the best job in the world. Thank you for the people you've helped along the way. Thank you for sharing yourself with all of us. I wish you and your family comfort, love, peace, and miracles as you fight this difficult battle together.

Amy Smith - Canton, Ohio

I listened to you daily on WKDD. I am so sorry to hear of your illness. I have hope that you can beat this. God is great and I believe all things are possible Le. Wishing you and your family all the best during this trying time. Enjoy life to the fullest and don't let a word be left unspoken. None of us are guaranteed tomorrow so we should all live life that way. Please keep us all updated. Prayers and Best Wishes.

I'm a listener from Dallas. I actually found you thru Michael Berry, as you subbed for him a few years ago at Christmas. This was a couple years before you guys' shows were broadcast here locally on KFXR. Thank God for iHeartRadio, as I was already a fan before your show came here..you being on a local station here just made it better. I was at a conference in AZ that Wednesday morning when you came on Berry's show and announced your diagnosis. That broke my heart, but I knew you'd tough it out, and you exceeded all expectations. Yep...I remember where I was. Mid September, 2015. You mean that much. Keep up the good fight. I heard your broadcast from July 5, and I immediately wanted to bawl...but I won't do that. I'll stay strong, and so will you. God bless you and your family, Matt Patrick. You're a damn good man, and a hero in many respects. Love you,

I was so saddened to hear that (you are) at the point of discontinuing ... treatments.  What a hard but brave decision to have to make.  I listened to Matt for many, many years when he was at WKDD.  Matt, Barbara Adams (BA as he affectionately called her) and Steve French were the best.  My drives to school and then work were so enjoyable and went by so quickly because of them.  I wish Matt peace and love and hope that he knows how much joy he has brought to others in his esteemed career in radio these 30+ years.  God Bless and Godspeed, my friend.  You are an inspiration.

There are so many things that you can do. Don't let conventional medical failure end your fight! We have been fighting with a holistic remedy for a year and a half with success! Please reach out to us! We will be glad to tell you about our treatment.

I listened to you for years :) My earliest recollection of you goes back to 6th grade, which must have been in like 1980. I remember the big dispute of WKKD vs WGCL breaking out in our classroom and who had the best DJ. For the life of me - I can't remember who the DJ on WGCL was, so I hope you can deduct that I fell on the side of KDD. :) In all seriousness, wanted you to know that you had a big impact on my generation, and many that followed. You were a positive force in the Akron community, and it was a sad day when we lost you.   I wish you all the best - and you will be in my prayers. I pray that you and you family have many enjoyable days ahead of you. Best wishes!

I can't tell you when I started listening to you in the morning on WKDD, I'm guessing sometime in the 90's.  I worked at Fedex and worked the phone bank for the Akron Children's Have a Heart tele-thon.  You rallied Akron Ohio to donate millions for the kids over the years.  I left Fedex in 2003, but stayed tuned in to KDD for my morning commute until you left in 2009. You'll be happy to,know I returned to the tele-thon this year as I am now employed by National Interstate Insurance in Richfield . I have thought of you often in these last 9 years, not knowing of your on-going battle with the dreaded big C.  I understand from today's media that you have decided to halt conventional treatment.  Please consider the alternative treatments such as the Ketogenic diet or Cannibis oil. May you draw strength from your family, our Lord Jesus Christ and your extended family in Northeast Ohio.  I will keep you in my prayers.

We had a chance to shake hands and visit briefly a while back at the RCC. Except from that, and being a regular listener, I don't really know you....but you feel like a friend to me.  If you please, I'd like to share this with you........ In February, my wife was diagnosed with Stage 4 Appendix Cancer.  Considering everything, she is doing fairly well.  But I wanted to let you know how your fight has taught us to fight.  Sharing your faith in our most merciful Father has encouraged us to remain faithful.  You've proven how important it is to have positive family members and a strong base of supporters.  And we love you for it, sir. While none of us know why we were put on this Earth, please know that you have made a difference in the life of my family.  God speed, Matt.  Your brother in Christ,

Bob Pritz

I've won numerous tickets to events on your show. Thanks for giving me the opportunity to make some fond memories with those tickets. It's great to hear your point of view in the mornings, though I don't agree with every one of them, but I do with the majority of them. God bless you and your family as you fight the toughest battle ahead.

Have some of my greatest memories of high school and college years with Matt's voice as the soundtrack.  Still play some 80s cassettes recorded off WKDD from those summer mornings! Thanking the Lord for His promise of grace and peace and the strength that only He gives... to Matt and his entire family.  Press on!

I listened to you in Akron OH every day. You always made me laugh, you were always up beat, and did so much for charities. I am praying for you & your family. You're the best. God Bless you.

Although we have never met I can tell you are such a great person.  I learn things from you, political and otherwise.  I hear how you care about your family. I love your sense of humor and your love for God. You are someone who makes a difference in the lives of those you know and in the lives of people you have never met. I am rooting for you and praying for you through your challenges and have been SO hopeful and optimistic that you would be victorious. I am so sorry you cannot continue your radio show... I can tell you enjoyed your work. We have been so PROUD here in Houston to have someone who spoke so well for conservatism.  Sometimes I just cannot believe the way things turn out in life.  From what I know yours is a life well lived!  I know you've had your struggles but you have overcome.  What a wonderful example. I will continue to pray - just know that we are out here loving you!!

I listened to your interview telling us nothing more could be done. I was so sad to hear this!  I've heard those words too, they suck! I then went down memory lane, back to Barbara Adams and the waking crew......whoa..... GET YOUR BUTT OUT the bed the waking crew is coming to your home........Yep thats what woke me on my clock radio/alarm for years. Thanks for helping me get motivated and up and moving as I was not the morning person back then, lol I am a little better now. I respect your decision to trust in God Matt. I am a born-again Christian, I love God and my family! I had some major health issues, not as life threatening as yours. I tried conventional medicine and was told go home and learn to live with it as thats all they could do. I found a GOD given molecule which strengthened and supported my weak immune system. It gave me  back a quality of life that I was very thankful for. It didn't cure me Matt, but I could work again, enjoy my family and the depression disappeared.  I know the exhaustion its hard to read and absorb.  God bless you!

Prayers & God's guidance in this journey. May Your family have the strength to hug you more everyday. We are here for you now. You entertained us every morning as we readied for work or school in Akron back in the day.  Thanks for being there for us!

Please know that you , your family and your friends are prayed for every day.  What a wonderful example you have set for this community  & for your son.  I truly admire your intelligence, your kindness, your humor and above all ....your strength.  Our God is an awesome God and I know he riding shotgun with you every minute of every day. Hugs , Hugs, Hugs!

I have listened to Matt Patrick since I was a boy, listening from Wooster Ohio and always enjoying hearing him and his stories in the mornings as I got ready for school and eventually driving to school.  I was a faithful listener from the early 80's to the time he left Akron.  I listened as him and BA dif their thing and through all the other Dj's.  One thing I learned was he was just plain honest as he revealed parts of his life, he was humble, he was human.  He became a man of God and shared that with the people of Akron.  He obviously loves kids and has done so much for Akron and many other communities. He always came down to our level the normal listener and for that I think he will always be the best of the best even though he will no longer Dj.  I wish nothing but the absolute best for Matt and his family and will pray to give him strength and ask God to give him and his family strength through all of this!  Matt you were a big brother to many of us, a step in dad, a friend, a guy we could relate to and for that we all love you and will always be there for you.

My prayers go out to you and your family.   You were such a staple of my teens and early years.   Was very sad to see you leave NE Ohio and now sad to hear the news of your health.   My thoughts are with you.

I grew up listening to you on WKDD. My sister and I sat side by side on our vanity bench in Massillon, Ohio every morning getting ready for the day and curling our then big 80's hair well into the 90's. Your voice and show filled our home with laughter. You came with me in the car on the way to college and work and became a constant that we looked forward to. Thank you Matt. God bless you and yours. Prayers that thousands of angels descend on you and your family to surround you and carry you through this difficult journey.

In the mid '80s, I was on the rock station across town from Matt.. who was doing mornings on the local pop station, WKDD in Akron, Ohio.   At WONE, we were the new kids in town and Matt was dominating mornings on the other station.   Since I was the overnight guy, I'd get off the air and flip around listening to what the other stations were doing.. and you could hear Matt's love for what he was doing.  We had a lot of competition in NE Ohio with the likes of WMMS & WNCI coming out of Cleveland, then the stations in Canton nipping from the south.  But certainly Matt was at the top the class at WKDD! I'm sad to hear that Matt is dealing with cancer and my thoughts and prayers are with him and his family.   Stay strong, Matt!   Stay positive for yourself and your

I already sent one message, but remembered something momentarily after I hit send that I'd like to share. I remember one of your shows where you talked about men who run shirtless in the blistering heat. I laughed so hard! I didn't realize at the time that both my husband and I would take up running, nor that my husband and I would end up being repeat marathoners. But this particular episode of the morning show on WKDD is one I will never forget because after we took up running, I noticed a ton of guys out running shirtless in the heat. I even dubbed them the "no shirt club." Thank you for that!

I was disappointed when KTRH changed the morning news format in 2011. However, you came in and made the show something special, something of your own. I haven't always agreed with everything you've said but I've always appreciated your values and the core beliefs behind them. I'm glad I've had someone to listen to for the last six years who valued God and family as you do. I am saddened by the thought that I may have heard you on the air for the last time. I'll be praying for a miracle for you, for your family and for everyone who loves you. Take care, my friend. Thank you for being there.

Matt has touched many people throughout his years in radio. Our son Zach, my husband,Greg and me, when our son won the DARE contest for the city of Akron in 2004, we were invited to be on the air to play his PSA. We still have the video 13 years later. Thank you Matt for all you have done! Zach is 25 and now living in Chicago and working for Ernst & Young as a Senior Consultant in their Technology Division. I like to think this had a lot to do with his success! I've also been on the Women's Board at Akron Children's Hospital for 15 years and remember the Have a Heart, Do your Part Radiothons he used to host. I especially remember the last year he hosted in 2008 when we raised over $1,000,000. What a thrill that was! It was a pleasure to be a part of it! Best wishes to you!

Back in the early 80s, just out of high school, I had to travel from my home near Nashville, Ohio to Canton and back daily over a 6 month span for radiation treatments for my cancer. Most of those days you kept me entertained on the radio!  Thanks for that, and God Bless you and family with peace and strength!

You joined us (Akron Children's Hospital) on the bus to the Columbus Statehouse to fight for Medicaid years ago. Then, years later, I ran into you at the Akron/Canton Airport. I think you were heading to Disney. I've been following your progress. You've really put up a good fight against Cancer. I pray that God will bless you. Never give up. God can provide miracles. I'll keep you in my prayers. Enjoy your family. God bless you,

I heard the story about Matt and wanted to extend my wishes and prayers for him.  My husband had esophogeal cancer and because he had a kidney transplant and had a suppressed immunity, he did not win his fight.  I miss him like crazy!!  But you can do this!!!! I am praying for you!!!!!  Ask Jesus into your heart and confess Him as Lord, you will be saved.  Romans 10:9,10   He saved you from your sins.

Nancy Mackey

Although we haven't spoken in years, you are so often top-of-mind.  Just earlier this week, I told Anita about one of my favorite memories when Jack Snyder and I  went to visit you the same day at WKDD.  You had recently made the 'eccentric purchase' of an old Caddie (??), and after lunch, the three of us rode in it through the drive-thru car wash while listening to James Brown's "Living In America" on the radio.  Living in America, indeed !!   Just know that you are loved.  Thoughts, prayers and general good vibes are headed in your direction right now. Thx again

I use to love listening to Matt and Barb Adams on WKDD in Akron Oh.  Barb had an awesome laugh!  They would keep me in stitches with all their silliness!  Matt did so much for Children 's hospital radiothon.  Everyone loved him. Matt good luck with your health.  We Akronites will keep you and your family in our thoughts.

Just saw the report on WKYV regarding Matt Patrick's cancer.  I met him a few times in Akron.  His girls went to day care with my boys Kyle and Sawyer and eventually attended Hoban High School together.  He lived in Silver Lake for a time and we saw him around often at Moe's, Life Center Plus, Silver Lake Elementary, the pool, etc. Our hearts and prayers are with the entire family - particularly the kids.  Too young.  Prayers, Sir.

I've been listening to you since I was a junior in high school growing up in Warren, Ohio! Then remember quite the evenings at Max M'Q's with Nolan! ?? No one in this industry exists in a bubble and even though it is crazy and there are a lot of stressful times, the connections that I have been able to make are what keep me going. I want you to know that we are all continuing to pray for Matt, Paula and their kids but also for all as his work family. I am shocked and saddened to learn the news Matt shared yesterday and have already been missing his voice in the morning but I know that prayer is powerful and there are a lot of people praying for him right now and that gives me hope.

You and yours will be in our prayers! I know the fabulous "work ethic" you have as a Broadcaster… and I'm confident that the same attitude sustains you in this battle for your health. I'm not suggesting you're an "inpatient patient'; instead I think of you as a good man working to overcome a tough break. May God pour out healing, sustenance, and encouragement to you and your family.Feel free to reach out to me any time!

JD Hayworth - Newsmax

Really don't know how to start to convey my feelings on your battle. I like you relocated to Houston from Pittsburgh, Pa. and love this city, you have been my morning host from the day I first listened to you. I will pray for you and wish the best for you and your family, your years here in Houston have been an inspiration to all of us. God Bless.

I wish it hasn't been so long since you and I talked. So much has happened in both of our lives. Right now, I understand you're in a battle yourself.  One of the things I think back on most fondly is bringing my kids to Radiothon every year at Akron Children's Hospital.  You would have children and their families tell their stories of their battles, and you would always be so encouraging and tell them to keep fighting.  Well that's what I'm telling you now old friend.......keep fighting!  This world is a happier, much better place with you in it. I so enjoyed your time at WKDD.  I don't know if you realize, but you helped me get through the toughest time of my life.  I made it through it, just like you will get through this.  Calling in to talk to you and laugh was therapeutic for me.  Being an Ohio State grad, I of course always looked forward to Michigan week because of the game.  But I also looked forward to it because it meant being able to call in to your program and start all the "Michigan" jokes. I know you have a great support system in Paula, Lexa, Alanna and Jake.  It's hard to believe how fast our kids have grown up.  It seems like just yesterday I made those cornhole boards for you as Lexa was getting ready to go off to Xavier.  I fondly remember when you and Paula had Jake, and how as he got older he would call into your show sometimes.  As for me, my oldest, Lauren, is now a mother (and I'm a grandfather if you can believe it).  My grandson's name is Theo (Theodore).  My middle child, Julia, is getting married in August.  His name is Andrew, and he is a Marine.  I figured you would like that about him.  My youngest, Steven, is going into 8th grade. You are not alone in this fight.  You have your immediate family, as well as the family that has grown in numbers every year you have been on the radio.  We are all there for you....thinking about you.......praying for you.  You will beat this, and we all look forward to the day when you are back on the air. "There's nothing more calming in difficult moments than knowing there's some one fighting with you."  (Mother Teresa) Take care my friend.  You are always in our thoughts.

Scott Arnold  (aka "The Man Card Supervisor")

Sending prayers to you and your family! Grew up listening to you on 96.5 WKDD. Listening to you and BA and the rest of the Waking Crew was such a big part of my growing up in the 80s. I discovered your show in Houston last year and have enjoyed hearing you again, it brought back a lot of memories. One of the funniest moments I remember was when BA played a  trick on you that she was fired. You were so mad and quit on the air! Continue to trust in the Lord, as His plan for you is the best of all!

The hole left in the Morning by the absence of Matt will be filled by the well wishes of the thousands that depended on his information and wit.  I cannot imagine the sadness of the KTRH team being informed of Matt's decision to proceed without treatment.  I especially offer my sad wishes to Matt's family and know they are supporting and participating in the decision with Matt.  He will be missed.

My best thoughts are with you and your family. I think of you so often with friendship and fun times. The 'waking crew' moment was probably up there in my top 10 list of AWESOME. Stay strong and don't give up the fight.

-----

I'm sorry to hear of your returning health problems - I will be praying for you and your family. I will miss you in the mornings on KTRH, and the interplay between you and Shara. This will sound odd, but you were inspiring with your messed up earlier life.  To hear how low you'd become in the depths of your battle with alcoholism, and to see the success you've had in turning things around and rebuilding serves as an example that redemption and recovery are always possible.

Wishing the best and sending thoughts and prayers.  The first time I ever heard of Matt Patrick was maybe 20 years ago when he was the DJ for my daughters 8th grade dance in Dalton, OH.  She came home and was all excited that he had been there in Dalton and even danced with the girls…  MEMORIES… After that I began to listen to him on the radio while he was in Akron and enjoyed him for years after that.  Lots of happy times hearing him and those sad times when they would host the Akron Children's event.  Would sit in my car on those mornings, listen and cry.  I felt just as sad and shed some tears this morning when I read the news of his battle with Cancer. Thanks for some great memories…

You may not remember me, but in my single days, I was an avid listener and used to call in to the morning show on WKDD. (I was close friends with Elizabeth and Philip Thorne.) I was lucky enough to be chosen to "Leap with the Waking Crew" the year you took a small group bungee jumping on Leap Day. We drove to some remote railroad bridge in PA and it was positively frigid that day! Suffice it to say, many of my back issues probably stemmed from that jump! But I had a blast and not many people have my story to tell! I became a Christian right about that time and when I "leapt" I left my "old" life behind and began a whole new journey. I have since had a battle with cancer and praise God, am well now. I believe in the power of prayer and I will lift you up to a God who hears and heals. I pray you have the peace of knowing him. Be well, my friend.

Pardon the analogy, but as with procreation, "out of billions, one is created." You were chosen as 'the one' to deeply touch so many other lives during this chapter of your life. (Tearfully typed) Take it as a badge of honor! By the way, MD Anderson is amazing. I believe my mother was one of the few people to undergo an experimental (Peacock) treatment (15 years ago). Hopefully, any information gained through that study has helped your fight! Much love, Matt; to you & your family!

-----

If you're like me you hate being in a doctors care. You also probably hate listening to advice ... from anybody. Like me, at some time in your life you gave your self to Jesus Christ. Put your soul in his hands but put your life in the hands of your doctors. Don't worry if they are not Christians, you're well known enough that they don't dare screw up. I'll pray that I'm right on that score and that I've given you good advice. If you feel well enough, use this time away from the microphone to strengthen your relationships with your family and find new ways to share time with them. God Bless you, your family, your doctors and all of us that are pulling for you.

Three years ago I relocated to Houston from San Antonio. I was a daily listener of the ever-cantankerous Charlie Parker on WOAI. You were a welcome - and the BEST - ever-cantankerous replacement I could have ever wished for. Every weekday morning you make me think, every weekday morning you make me laugh, and every weekday morning you remind how great it is to be an American. I miss you pal ... it's not the same without you and I haven't heard Shara's wonderful laugh since you've been away. Take your time and get better - for your family - and for your friends in your listening audience that can't wait for you to get back to work ... but rest assured, we will wait ... and we will continuously send our prayers to the Good Lord for your complete recovery.

Beau - Houston

-----

Hang tough, you can beat this. I listen to you and Shara from 0500-0600 every AM on my drive to Katy. We're all pulling for you to get over this quickly and back to the microphone on a regular basis.
