Bum Phillips to be Honored by the Titans

Despite never coaching a game for Tennessee, former Houston Oilers head coach Bum Phillips will be inducted into the Titans' Ring of Honor this season.

Phillips was the head coach of the Oilers from 1975 to 1980 and appeared in two AFC Championship Games with Houston, and delivered one of the best lines in all NFL history at an Astrodome Pep Rally in front of 700,000 fans when he told the crowd, "“Last year, we knocked on the door. This year, we pounded on the door. Next year we’re going to kick that sumbitch in.”

Phillips was 55-35 in his six seasons as Houston head coach.

In 1997 the Houston Oilers were moved by owner Bud Adams to Tennessee where they were renamed The Tennessee Titans.
