UPDATE: Suspect charged with manslaughter in Bellaire High School shooting

UPDATE: The 16-year old suspect in the case has been charged with manslaughter and was not co-operative during questioning overnight.

The teen was arrested last night on Caversham Drive near Chimney Rock Road.

A student died after being shot outside Bellaire High School Tuesday afternoon. The victim, reported to be a 16-year-old boy, was reportedly shot in the chest as classes let out around 4 p.m. The shooting happened in the courtyard outside the school. The suspected shooter, who has not been identified, fled the scene but was caught and arrested hours later. The victim was rushed by ambulance to Ben Taub Hospital but later died. Police have not released any info on what led to the shooting, nor whether the suspect was also a student.

The Houston ISD released the following statement Tuesday night:

The Bellaire Police Department and HISD Police Department have confirmed that a suspect has been arrested in connection with the tragic death of a Bellaire High School student. HISD will cancel classes for students at Bellaire High School tomorrow, Wednesday, January 15. However, staff members are asked to report to campus. Bellaire High School students should report to school on Thursday, January 16.
