Proposed Texas bill would ban using food stamps on soda and "junk food"

A proposed bill in Texas would ban food stamp recipients from using their government benefits to buy groceries considered to be “junk food.”

That includes soda (sweetened or carbonated beverages), potato or corn chips, candy, and cookies.

The bill would also prohibit people from using food stamps on energy drinks or any beverage, other than coffee, containing 65 milligrams of caffeine per cup.
