Woodlands man dies during Ironman triathalon

A 54-year-old local man died Saturday morning while competing in the Ironman triathlon for the 7th time. His name has not been released.

The Ironman triathlon is taking place just 27 miles north of Houston, includes challenges that begin with a 2.4 mile swim in Lake Woodlands.

It starts from North Short Park and ends at Town Green Park. Then challengers take a 112-mile bike ride along east Texas. The triathlon ends with a 26.2-mile run in the Woodlands and finishing on Waterway Avenue.

Authorities say he died during the swimming portion, where he showed signs of weakness. He was then pulled out the water and taken to Memorial Hermann, The Woodlands Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
