Former University of Houston quarterback Case Keenum is now a former Texan.

The team cut him in one of their moves to finalize their 53 man roster for the regular season, acquiring New England backup Ryan Mallett for a conditional 7th round draft pick in 2016.

Keenum had some initial success after replacing Matt Schaub last year, but ultimately went 0-8 as a starter.  He also failed to distinguish himself in the preseason, as he battled with rookie Tom Savage for the primary backup slot behind Ryan Fitzpatrick.

There has long been talk that Mallett was on his way to Houston.  The 26-year old former third-round draft pick from Arkansas played for Bill O’Brien when he was the offensive coordinator for the Patriots.

The Houston Texans open their regular season Sunday against the Washington Redskins at NRG Stadium.
