Researchers in Mexico have found that the natural sugars found in a blue agave plant have medicinal benefits. Blue Agave is the plant tequila is made from.
The research was done on mice, which were fed agavins, the natural sugars in the plant. It prevented the mice from developing diabetes and becoming obese.
Dr. Fab Mancini is the author of the bestselling book The Power of Self-Healing. He’s also been featured on many national shows, including Dr. Phil, and The Doctors. “What we didn’t know in the past [about agavins] is that it is an appetite suppressant. It showed that it is effective in weight loss,” Dr. Mancini tells KTRH News.
Researchers in Dallas divided mice into separate groups. One group was kept on a diet of just water; other groups were each given a sugar substitutes: aspartame, glucose, fructose, sucrose, and agave syrup. The mice that were given agavins ate less than mice in the other groups, gained less weight, and had a decrease in blood glucose levels. In fact, they came out of the regimen in much the same condition as those that had been on a water diet.
“The thing that really made it interesting to me is that it reduced the blood glucose level,” says Dr. Mancini.
“We believe agavins have a great potential as a light sweetener,” Mercedes G. López, of the Centro De Incetagcioan y de Estudios Avanzados, Biotechnology and Biochemistry Irapuato, in Guanajuato, Mexico, wrote in the research abstract. “They are sugars, highly soluble, with a low glycemic index and a neutral taste. This puts agavins in a tremendous position for their consumption by obese and diabetic people.”
Dr. López cautions that agavins are not widely available and are not as sweet as other natural sugars.
