The Bible battle in Kountze is not over.
Attorneys for the district are appealing a judge's order to allow cheerleaders to continue displaying banners with Bible verses. David Starnes is the attorney for the students and told our own Matt Patrick about the judge's order:
"There is no constitutional violation, nor any other law of the state that prohibits these cheerleaders from using religious messages on their run-through banners... We were never trying to get a money judgment out of Kountze; we just wanted the girls to be able to display their banners with their religious scriptures on them."
The suit was originally filed by the Freedom from Religion Foundation. The students have the backing of Governor Perry and Attorney General Greg.
