THE STORM

We’re talking about it….most of us anyway….the storms on various horizons. Real storms…the tropical waves, cyclones, hurricanes…that cost in dollars, property, and the costliest of all….lives. We’ve been at it all week, not just because it’s important, but because we have more warning, more knowledge, more ways to measure and alert people in a storm path.

And afterwards the photos of the devastation. Forever catalogued for Texans: Carla, Alicia, Rita, Ike, Harvey… and the granddaddy of them all, before there were names, The Great Galveston Storm of 1900. When falling barometric pressure was the only knowledge of the coming storm, mass evacuation was not given a thought. At least 8000, and as many as 12,000 people died. That’s why we talk early and talk long, these 118 years later.
