With rain upon us and more rain on the way, it was a jarring start to the Jewish New Year for local Congregation Beth Yeshurun. The synagogue has only recently been totally renovated after being underwater by Harvey. Many of the congregants have still not returned to their own homes, but were happy to be observing the High Holidays in the newly restored synagogue.
But there was a hitch. Sunday afternoon’s fast moving thunderstorm and lightning knocked out the transformer supplying power to one of the largest conservative congregations in American. Some 3500 worshipers arriving for services found themselves diverted. Still, they carried on….as guests of temples throughout southwest Houston. Congregations opening their hearts and services to each other. It’s another reminder of how Houston rolls with our punches. A sweetness appropriate to the season.
