They say there’s nothing new under the sun, but this discovery comes close. It is just paint and canvas after all, but it’s a Rembrandt, a work of art by the master which probably hasn’t been acknowledged as such in some 400 years.
It’s a portrait of a well-dressed young man….discovered by a Dutch art dealer at a London auction. He bought it for 185-thousand dollars. What is it really worth? The last Rembrandt to be sold, that was in 2009, went for 33 million dollars.
This one, appropriately, will be displayed in an Amsterdam museum this week, presented as the first, rare Rembrandt painting to surface since 1974. Some discovery by art dealer Jan Six. Where it goes next and for how much….that certainly is new territory.
