STATE CHAMPION FIDDLER

They were tearing it up on stage in my hometown of Hallettsville, in this 48th year of the Texas State Championship Fiddlers Frolics.  Since my late father was one of the founders of the contest, I’ve attended and helped behind the scenes at every one.  Just never imagined I’d be carrying the music and video streaming it live on my phone, as I did this weekend.  It’s all posted on our KTRH Facebook page as well as this blog at KTRH.com.

Fiddling may not be your thing, but the talent of the musicians can’t be denied.  Music that is handed down over generations, in the learning of it as well as the progression of adding new note and flourishes to time-honored tunes.  Texas fiddling took old country to new levels and it continues.  This year the 3 top fiddlers were all young folk. The second place finisher female.  None of the 3 had been Texas Champ before…..

Jason Andrew won the title, but you can bet we’ll be hearing more from Roberta Smith and Ridge Roberts, and dozens more, next year. More video
