THE LONG NOW

It's a project that has been some 3 decades in the making, a brainchild of a guy named Danny Hills and a group called "the long now".

But it's the big now of Amazon that is actually building a ten-thousand year clock....inside a mountain in West Texas. The 500-foot-tall mechanical clock is powered by daily thermal cycles and synchronized at solar noon. It ticks just once a year. A century hand advances once every 100 years and the cuckoo comes out on the millennium. A prototype is on display in the Science Museum in London.

The real thing being built near Van Horn on land owned by Amazon founder Jeff Bezos with a 40 million dollar price tag. He calls the 10-thousand year clock, "a symbol, an icon for long-term thinking".
