I shouldn’t have needed the reminder, but Josh Ennis of Sports Talk 790 did remind me of what it means for a city when baseball and its home team is part of its basic fabric and culture. You know those cities across America, and how Houston is not tops among them.
Lots of reasons why, I suppose, among them that football, high school, college and pro. has long been king. But I also grew up in a small Texas town where summers meant Little League and still do.
Houston’s history of Nolan Ryan, Mike Scott, JR Richards, the Killer B’s and even announcer Milo Hamilton gives us a rich legacy already. With this talented team of 2017 and fueled by the defiant spirit of fans who are overcoming Hurricane Harvey, maybe this is the year Houston Astros become a definition of the city we love.
