TUTS FOUNDER

It started on a starry night in Houston in 1968…well, maybe it was overcast given our muggy summers…but the idea was to treat Houstonians to musical Theatre Under the Stars.  That’s how TUTS got its name and its start.

It was the brainchild of founder Frank Young, with some ample financing from Houstonians, a notable standout being Shirley Stein…oh, how she loved music and with Frank Young staging, directing , producing, cajoling civic leaders and donors….we all got the benefit of the best of musical theater.  TUTS expanded to the indoor stage too, but those summer nights at Miller Outdoor Theatre with picnic baskets and blankets on the hill…it was the perfect no cost entertainment for young and old budgets.  Frank Young has died peacefully at the age of 77.  Remembered with fondness and a huge part of Houston cultural history.
