The quote is from Ben Franklin, upon leaving the Constitutional Convention of 1787 and asked what type of government for America, replied, " A republic, ma'am, if you can keep it."
230 years later, it is a valid question if we still have a republic at all...and are we keeping the Constitution that keeps it?
We should all search ourselves for that answer as we observe Constitution Day September 17th. Whatever your political bent, that you can display it, activate it, ignore it, is protected by the document whose writers despised tyranny above all. Tyranny of government, tyranny of a monarch or single individual and tyranny of the majority too. That’s why Franklin replied “republic” not democracy. If you don’t know the difference, why not dedicate Constitution Day to absorbing that.
