Pentagon Releases Video Footage From Raid That Killed ISIS Leader

The Pentagon declassified video footage and images from the raid that resulted in the death of Islamic State leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi. General Frank McKenzie said that when U.S. forces closed in on the compound, which was located in northern Syria, they came under fire from combatants who they did not believe were affiliated with al-Baghdadi. Those forces were wiped out by airstrikes.

When the troops stormed the compound, they came under fire from five ISIS fighters. They killed the militants and found al-Baghdadi hiding in a tunnel. When they went to capture the ISIS leader, he detonated a suicide vest, killing himself and two children who were hiding with him.

The troops conducted a DNA test on-site to positively identify the remains of al-Baghdadi, and his body was dumped into the sea. They gathered as much intelligence from the compound as they could before it was destroyed by airstrikes.

The entire raid lasted about two-and-a-half hours.
