Sebastian Steudtner, the 37-year-old from Germany, caught the massive wave back in October of 2020, but it took 18-months for a team of scientists along with officials from the Guinness Book Of World Records to determine that the wave was larger than the previous record of 80 feet tall.
The old record was set by Brazilian Rodrigo Koxa back in 2017.
The record setting wave was caught at the Praia do Norte beach in Nazaré, Portugal.
“It's the fifth time the infamous surfing beach has distinguished itself as the stage for the biggest wave in the world.
Praia do Norte beach has optimal characteristics for surfing giant waves due to the geological phenomenon known as the "Nazaré Canyon": a 170 km long and 5 km deep fault in the sea bed that propels the swell from the Atlantic Ocean towards the coast.”
