The Officer Down Memorial Page (ODMP), a nonprofit dedicated to honoring fallen officers across the country says Texas has seen 22 law enforcement deaths so far this year.
California has the second highest, they have seen 6.
The Houston Police Officer’s Union says over the last 70 days, five law enforcement officers have been killed in Harris County alone.
The numbers come after two officers in the Greater Houston area were killed over the past week, one of whom, Deputy Sheriff Darren Almendarez, was off-duty confronting thieves trying to steal catalytic converters from his truck outside a grocery store, while the second, Deputy Constable Jennifer Chavis, was killed by a drunk driver.
