On Sunday, LAPD officers responded to the scene of a plane crash and were forced to pull the bloodied pilot out seconds before a train smashed into the wreckage.
The single-engine Cessna 172 crashed on the train tracks, injuring the pilot as a double-decker commuter train barreled in its direction.
The pilot’s son in-law tells NBC Los Angeles, “he’s suffered pretty significant damage to his face, a lot of broken bones. He’s also got broken ribs...He cheated death twice in two minutes.”
Another angle:
The FAA said in a statement that the plane went down at a busy intersection after taking off from Whiteman Airport with the pilot being the only person on-board.
Two officers yanked at the pilot out of the plane as a third and fourth tried to help and warn them that the train was near.
The span of time between the video's focus on officers tugging on the pilot in his seat and the collision is roughly 6 seconds.
The pilot was taken to a trauma center for treatment of unknown injuries.
No other injuries were reported.
