The media are celebrating and holding Kumi Yokoyama as a new hero.
Yokoyama, a native of Japan, plays for the Washington Spirit in the National Women’s Soccer League and "they" (Yokohama's preferred pronoun) announced is a transgender man.
Yokohama said in a video posted to social media, “I'm coming out now.In the future, I want to quit soccer and live as a man."
The team expressed the support and pride in Yokoyama saying "Thank you for showing the world it's ok to embrace who you are!" the team tweeted, adding that the player uses they/them pronouns.”
But if Yokohama is a man now, shouldn’t “they” be trying out for the male teams? That’s how it works right.
