Paris Teacher Beheaded After Showing Class Cartoons Of Muhammad

Utterly horrific.

A middle school history teacher was targeted and killed in a gruesome attack in a Paris suburb on Friday.

That teacher identified as 47-year-old Samuel Paty was teaching on civics lesson on free speech when he showed the class cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad that the satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo has previously published.

Paty had reportedly received threats over the lesson and one parent had filed a complaint.

The attack occurred near the school and police shot the suspect dead.

The BBC reports:

"French President Emmanuel Macron visited the scene, calling the killing an "Islamist terrorist attack".
Mr Macron said he was murdered because he "taught freedom of expression"."

In response to the murder, people across France rallied to remember Paty.

NPR reports that:

"Rallies formed in cities including Paris, Lyon, Nantes, Toulouse, Strasbourg, Marseille and Bordeaux. Thousands convened in Paris' Place de la République, which Huffington Post France reported was filled at times with the sounds of applause, the French national anthem and a solemn minute of silence…
Attendees at demonstrations across the country carried signs reading "I am Samuel" and "I am a teacher,"..."

Police says the suspect shot dead by police was an 18-year-old Moscow-born Chechen refugee.

Fox News reports:

France's anti-terrorism prosecutor's office said authorities investigating the killing of Samuel Paty in Conflans-Sainte-Honorine on Friday also arrested nine suspects, including the teen's grandfather, parents and 17-year-old brother.
The French anti-terrorism prosecutor Jean-Francois Ricard…told reporters that the suspect, who had been granted a 10-year residency in France as a refugee in March and was not known to intelligence services, had been armed with a knife and an airsoft gun, which fires plastic pellets.
The prosecutor said a text claiming responsibility and a photograph of the victim were found on the suspect's phone. Ricard said the suspect had been seen at the school asking students about the teacher, and the headmaster had received several threatening phone calls.
