Shelley Luther, owner of Salon A La Mode, says she can no longer afford to remain closed.
She says “I'm behind on my mortgage.I know a lot of my stylists haven't paid their mortgage. It's either come in and make money to be able to feed your family or stay home and freak out."
She opened last week & the city of Dallas wrote her a citation for violating the shut down order.
She says “I'm not going to shut down...I can't afford to not stay open, and my stylists can't afford to stop working anymore. We're about to lose everything and haven't gotten any help, so I had to make a decision."
There are 19 stylists who work at the salon. Luther said they need to get back to work immediately, with strict precautions in place for both workers and clients.
At a rally on Sunday, Luther tore up the citation saying “I’m not anyone special.I just know that I have rights. You have rights to feed your children and make income and anyone that wants to take away those rights is wrong.”
