Book drive Sunday for Hurricane Harvey children

A child is doing something awesome to help Hurricane Harvey victims this weekend. So if you have any books laying around that you would like to donate to a book drive that would help kids going to total loss, even today, this is your chance to give back...

Press Release from Brooke:

I wanted to reach out to you personally to tell you more about the work I have been doing to help children who lost their possessions during Hurricane Harvey.

Back during Hurricane Harvey we were safe. And while we quickly went out to help others I was really saddened by all the destruction. So many people lost their homes and a lot of the discussions were about how to rebuild. But as a a twelve year old girl, I was thinking about how I would feel if I had not only lost my house but my belongings as well. I love to read and my books are some of my favorite things. I even collect some vintage Nancy Drew books that I have collected when we travel, or my entire Harry Potter series that I have read more than once.

So when my mom shared with me a grant opportunity through Youth Service America (YSA) I knew exactly the type of project I wanted to put on and thats when Brooke's Book Bash started.

So far I have collected over 1000 new and gently used books and this Sunday, January 7 from 2:00-3:30 the event will take place at the Jewish Community Center of Houston in the Executive Board Room. I have invited local author Claudia Macias to do a story time at 2:15 and there will be a Dr. Seuss themed story time at 2:45 followed by a visit by the Cat in the Hat himself. I have created a lot of book-themed activities. Each child who attends will leave with books to help replenish their home libraries. I worked to create my very first website, have posted advertisements across town, worked with small media outlets to lets them know about the event and had my mom post it on her social media account. I would appreciate you helping spread the world as well.

I feel that this is an important event because it was started by a kid, planned by a kid and is for kids. I am really passionate about books and I know the energy I put into this event with help make it a success.

Here is my website:

Sincerely,Brooke Lee
