Galveston transit officials say the low ridership numbers for a Galveston-to-Houston bus line come as no surprise. The Island Express route began service in September, and as of last week, the bus line is averaging a total of nine riders a day on all six of its weekday trips, three in each direction. The trip takes 90 minutes to two hours to reach downtown Houston from the island, which is far longer than it would take a commuter to drive it. The bus line is funded by a two-year grant from the Texas Department of Transportation, with matching funds from Texas City, Galveston, and Galveston County.
