Texas will open its first legal cannabis dispensary near the small town of Schulenburg, just 100 miles west of Houston along Interstate 10.
Preliminary approval in the Lone Star State on May 1st from the Texas Department of Public Safety from three organizations approved to dispense treatment for patients in the form of low-THC cannabis for epilepsy patients through Texas' Compassionate Use Program. A date is yet to be set for when operations are set to begin.

43 organizations submitted applications to be part of the Compassionate Use Program in early 2017 and the Texas Department of Public Safety ranked those wishing to participate on a 100-point scale, based on security plans, like camera and supervision, to how operations would actually run, like finances and accountability, infrastructure, plus a cover letter.
