The U.S. is tapping national reserves of gas as energy prices remain high and eat away at paychecks. Discretionary spending is flat, according to a Deloitte report released this week, but not down.
“I just looked at the Deloitte study and it says that spending is about flat, however I’m hearing a lot of chatter about how anxious people are to get out and about,” says Smart Shopping expert Trae Bodge. Summer vacation is around the corner and people are buying plane tickets and making resort reservations, not showing any indication that they are closing their wallets while prices escalate as they head off for dinner at their favorite restaurant. We aren’t limiting ourselves to essentials, just making trade-offs, adds Bodge. “And so my thought is that people are perhaps cutting back on other things in an effort to do all the ‘out an about’ things they want to do without breaking the bank.”
