Americans wagered more than three billion dollars on March Madness this year, but Texas has yet to join the gravy train.
State Rep. Dan Huberty says Texas is missing out on hundreds of millions of dollars in revenue as sports betting sites openly recruit new customers across the state.
"These offshore sites are advertising. People are gambling. People are betting in Texas. But the state is not generating any revenue off that," he says.
Huberty introduced legislation last year that would have put Texas at least one step closer to sports betting.
"There are some groups, particularly religious groups, that are opposed to it. And I understand that. That's why we were making a constitutional amendment to say hey, let's just have a vote on this."
"We think this is important to at least get out there and have a vote on it."
In the meantime, more states are legalizing sports betting and earning revenue while Texas waits for the next legislative session.
"We felt like in year one it was going to be anywhere from $125-150 million, growing up to over a half billion dollars a year," says Huberty, with portions of the proceeds going to disabled children and gambling support programs.
That leads to the poll question today.
