Ted Cruz says he misspoke calling Jan. 6 Capitol riot a “terrorist attack”

After spending a day being slammed by fellow conservatives for describing last year’s U.S. Capitol insurrection as a “violent terrorist attack,” U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz walked back his comments Thursday on the FOX program “Tucker Carlson Tonight.”

Cruz called his own words “sloppy” and “frankly dumb” and insisted he was referring only to the rioters who attacked police during the Capitol's breach on Jan. 6, 2021.

Cruz said he asked to appear on Carlson’s show so he could better explain himself. The senator said he understood that people were angry at his use of the word “terrorist” but insisted that he would never use it in the sense that “Democrats and the corporate media have so politicized” it to describe the “patriots” who were at the Capitol last year.
