A migrant caravan of some 2,000, on its way from southern Mexico toward the U.S. border, surged past a blockade of Mexican interior police Saturday as the officers attempted to halt it near Tapachula in Southern Chiapas state.
The highway checkpoint was manned by about 400 officers, but they appeared to put up little resistance as the migrants broke past.
U.S. authorities have arrested more than 1.7 million migrants at the U.S.-Mexico border this fiscal year, the most ever recorded.
