Fryer Feature: Looking to the Heavens

Mankind has always cast its eyes to the heavens and in this time of COVID, the stars don’t disappoint. Well, maybe just a little. I was really looking forward to the transit of that super comet Atlas. It was so BIG, but Atlas shrugged; or disintegrated. Hubble recorded the comet’s breakup toward the end of April. Pretty spectacular pictures of what we missed. But there’s something else to look forward to: NASA astronauts launching into space from American soil for the first time since that other administration in 2011.

On May 27, NASA astronauts Bob Behnken and Doug Hurley will board SpaceX's new Crew Dragon spaceship at Kennedy Space Center in Florida. Atop a Falcon rocket, about nine minutes to reach orbit and then a day long journey to the International Space Station.

These two make history as the first NASA commercial crews; 3 months aboard ISS and they’ll climb back into the capsule for a splashdown in the Atlantic. It’s good to be back.
