Fryer Feature: WHAT WE FORGET

WHAT WE FORGET

Texans have always valued valor. We honor it even as we sometimes forget the details of it. At the Utah Beach Memorial in Normandy, the many details keep history intact. It is good to be reminded of them, lest we forget.

Standing on that beach, I was reminded that the USS Texas was offshore on D Day, taking part in the Naval bombardment and largest amphibious assault in history.

And I was reminded that the last aerial bombing of the Nazi bunkers and entrenchments was piloted by San Antonio native, Major David Dewhurst, the father of Houstonians Gene and David, our former Texas Lt Governor.

In our group of Texas Exes, on the beach 75 years later, is a Corpus Christi native, a Silver Star recipient in the Vietnam Nam war. Among our group, he especially remembers.
