FRYER FEATURE: LIMITS OF THE MIND

On our early morning news talk, we naturally take notice when the story concerns the negative impacts of sleep deprivation.

Besides the inevitable warnings of weight gain, and irritability, there are more dire consequences of early physical death or, as we were told this morning, the death of memory and cognitive function, like Alzheimer’s. Yikes.

But then this note of hope from the University of Houston. Research is underway there to unlock a path of increasing memory and brain power. It’s about calcium signaling to calcium-modulated proteins; that’s about as scientific as I can get.But it’s promising, because the NIH has granted more than a million dollars to pursue it.

As the UH press release noted, the research seeks to crack the code of the limits of the human mind.Right here in Houston.
