The World Press Photo Foundation announced its 2019 award winners on Thursday, with the image of a young child crying at the US-Mexico border taking home the Photo of the Year prize.
Snapped by John Moore for Getty Images, "Crying Girl on the Border," shows a two-year-old crying while border agents in Texas pat her asylum-seeking mother down.
While critics of the White House used the photo to denounce a family separation policy, HuffPost notes that the mother and daughter were detained together and released pending a hearing.
Jurors for the contest had the tough task of selecting the nominees from 78,801 photographs by 4,738 international photographers.
