AUDIO: THE TEXAS GOVERNOR WHO TOOK OFFICE BY GUN - SHARA FRYER

Jimmy Barrett put me on the spot….asking have any Texas Governors resigned? I quickly remembered Pa Ferguson being impeached for financial malfeasance and Sam Houston being “deposed” by the Texas Legislature for refusing allegiance to the Confederacy….

But Texas politics and office holders are a colorful lot…..It happens when you begin as a Republic, become a state, withdraw, then occupied by a victorious Union Army, become a state again….a one party state for more than 100 years. So here’s my answer to Jimmy, the memorable resignation is from a Texas Governor who took the office by force, with the backing of the Travis Rifles.

Governor Richard Coke….elected in 1873, ruled null by the military-controlled Texas Supreme Court… but he secured the keys to the second floor of the Capitol, under arms was inaugurated, and when President Ulysses S Grant refused to intervene with troops….went on to lead Texas into a new constitution. Then Governor Coke resigned to become a U.S Senator.
