Houston's Employment Rate Outpaces America's Top U.S. Metropolitan Cites Adding Over 50K Jobs

From July of 2025 to July of 2026, more Houstonians are landing work at a growth pace of 1.3% substantially higher than the national average. According to the greater Houston partnership. Economist Vance Ginn points to construction jobs – up almost 6 percent.

“At 5.5 percent – the percent change is important because it shows with all these construction jobs- year over year-in Houston with all these construction jobs is indicating that hey there’s going to be more jobs for the business being built and more homes for people who want to move to Houston. I think these are all really good signs for the Houston economy.” Ginn said. He added this also helps businesses decide where to go as their employees need to find a home near their work.

Houston's real estate offers a vast number of choices with over 5 months in inventory and homes averaging round 330K.

Government jobs are 10K of the 50,000 Ginn added. Administration (Professional and Business Services) was also very strong with a 2.6% increase year over year totaling 15K jobs during that 12-month window.

The economist also points to Houston’s low inflation and housing affordability and availability. "A big part of that there is a little amount of zoning and restrictions- where you can build where you want." Ginn said. Inflation reflects a low in August of 2026 at 1.3%. Although much of Texas is still feeling the strain at the gas pump amid the conflict in Iran- affecting prices at the grocery store and hitting farmers and truckers running diesel.
