Some job recruiters are saying they've been inundated with applications that have been processed through artificial intelligence (AI), and that greatly lowers the value of solicited resumes as a hiring tool.
The resumes are just about perfect, from the writing to the page formatics, but recruiters are saying they all look the same, they've all been customized for the employment opening and they've all been personalized as much as possible for the recipient.
But ZeroTo1.ai Founder Ankur Dhawan says getting away from relying on resumes for hiring is a good thing.
"I think you need a different set of parameters to gauge what kind of person you're hiring.
"Every resume is going to look the same, and that's not going to be able to cut it."
He adds, "It just like a snapshot, it's just the first step, the first degree, you have to eventually have a conversation to get to know the person."
The job market has been changed by the wide introduction of AI and the results are mixed, he says.
"If you look at the trend for companies that have been on the AI bandwagon for a very long time, I'm talking about the Metas and the Googles, they have started to reduce their workforce.
"The companies that are now adopting, the late bloomers, they're the ones that are hiring people for getting organized in some ways, but the long-term trend is going to be that you're going to need fewer people to get the same amount of work done."
The huge number of resumes some companies are getting that look almost perfect are the result of having been custom edited and produced through AI, and that points up one of the complications of AI that is often overlooked -- the correct writing phenomenon.
In the past, people who could write in clear and/or compelling ways could become stand-outs in their companies, but with the advent of easy-access AI even people who can't write very well can get the bosses' attention by focusing their ideas through AI, which will then write the papers and produce project drafts for them.
Or as Ankur Dhawan puts it, "At Amazon, for example, if you were a good writer, if you were able to write a good two-page brief you would be able to shine even if you were not as good as somebody who had a lot of substance in their head but was not as good as putting it on a piece of paper."
