Update: A man and his girlfriend had to be rescued Wednesday morning after their vehicle became trapped in high water in Brazoria County. Both were safely rescued by emergency crews. With more rain expected, officials are urging drivers not to take chances on flooded roads.
Original: The first tropical storm of the Atlantic season is expected to slide past Southeast Texas today, bringing heavy rain and gusty winds to Galveston and coastal communities.
Tropical Storm Arthur could dump several inches of rain along the coast while producing wind gusts near 40 miles per hour and minor coastal flooding.
The storm system that has been dumping rain across the Texas coast has officially been declared a Tropical Storm by the National Hurricane Center, and officially dubbed "Tropical Storm Arthur."
According to the National Hurricane Center, as of 10:00am Arthur has maximum sustained winds of 40 miles per hour, and is traveling north east at 9 miles an hour.
The heaviest rain and strongest winds are expected east of the storm's center over the Gulf Coast. Localized street flooding remains possible in heavier downpours, but conditions should begin improving by Thursday.
A 30 percent chance of storms remains in the forecast during today's World Cup events in Houston.
